As owner of Rolf Gompertz Communications, he provides writing services and PR services to entertainment and non-entertainment clients. He works with leading PR agencies on an as-needed basis, writing press releases, biographies and press kits for them and their clients. He also provides print and broadcast media placement. He has placed stories with major consumer media about products and services, from folk art to greeting cards.
Prior to starting his own company in 1987, Gompertz was on staff with the National Broadcasting Company (NBC) for 30 years, first as a publicist and then, from 1983-1987, as a publicity director in the company's West Coast Press & Publicity Department. As a publicist, he handled TV series, specials, variety programs, TV movies and award shows. He also served as departmental feature writer for five years, conducting more than 500 one-on-one interviews with stars and celebrities. In addition, he served as editor of the company's West Coast employee publication for 13 years.
Before joining NBC, Gompertz was editor of a weekly newspaper. He received his B.A. and M.A. degrees in English from UCLA, graduating with honors.
Gompertz is a senior instructor at UCLA Extension, where he has taught since 1974. His courses include "Elements of Publicity," "Working with the Media," "Publicity Writing," "Working with the Entertainment Media," and "Publicity Writing for Television & Film."
He is the author of two PR books, "Publicity Writing for Television & Film" and "Publicity Advice & How-To Handbook," which are used as course texts, reference books by PR practioners, and practical training manuals by PR departments and agencies.
